Flood Situation

The monsoon rains, beginning during the last week of July have caused wide spread flooding in the state of Gujarat in western India. Vast areas have been submerged under water and many villages have been isolated. According to official estimates over 4.5 million people have become homeless and many others have lost their livelihood. The army has been deployed to assist rescue and relief operations. danger level.

BAPS Charities Relief Work

Responding to the critical needs of the people of the flood affected areas; BAPS Charities has started the immediate relief work in flood affected areas across Gujarat.

There is an urgent and pressing need for food and water distribution. To address this, BAPS Charities centers in Gujarat marshaled into action and prepared 133,905 food packets and 143,700 fresh water pouches at Amdavad, Valsad, Navsari, Sakari, Vadodara, Bochasan, Nadiad, Mehsana, Mehlav, Piplav, Bharuch, Gadhada, and Gandhinagar and Surendranagar in just one day.

Apart from this, 10,900 flood affected people have been provided meals and rice, flour and other food grains have been distributed to thousands in areas where it is possible to cook but food supplies are not available.

To ensure these food packets reach the affected areas during this critical time, volunteers defied heavy rain and walked through waist deep waters to reach the remote areas. Volunteers have also teamed up with the government officials to supply aid in certain areas. Where land vehicles are unable to trek in the heavily flood stricken zones, boats have been used to supply emergency aid.

In Surat and surrounding areas which are the worst affected by the torrential rain, it is not possible to reach there even by boat and food supplies are being air-dropped by Indian Air force. BAPS Charities volunteers from Bhavnagar, Gujarat helped and supported them.

A few trucks containing food supplies have reached Adajan near Surat and soon hot meal kitchens would be started there.

The relief effort of BAPS Charities is evolving in all affected regions and in this week around 300,000 food packets and water pouches will be distributed.
