CHARITIES RELIEF WORK IN FLOOD-AFFECTED GUJARAT
July 13, 2007
Gujarat, India |
|
Continuous monsoon
rainfall in the western Indian state of Gujarat has prompted
the state government to issue a red alert flood warning.
The Indian Army has joined the rescue operations in the
flood-affected areas of Gujarat, even as heavy rains continued
to lash the state. BAPS Charities has started immediate
relief work in 28 towns and villages to provide food, fresh
drinking water and shelter to the affected people.
Hot meals are being
served at many villages. Where it is not possible to provide
hot meals, food packets are being distributed along with
fresh drinking water. To ensure these food packets reach
the affected areas during this critical time, volunteers
defied heavy rain and walked through waist deep waters to
reach the remote areas. Volunteers have also teamed up with
the government officials to supply aid in certain areas.
Distribution of clothes, steel utensils, waterproof tents,
