| BAPS Charities Health Fair, Houston, TX
The 7th annual
BAPS Charities community Health Fair was held in Houston,
TX on April 07, 2007. Over a 160 medical professionals including
doctors, pharmacists, dentists and nurses carried out over
3000 different examinations at the health attended by over
1500 participants. These included physical examinations,
pediatric, eye, dental, hearing, skin, prostate screenings
and more. Tests such as detailed blood analysis, bone density,
echocardiogram, vascular studies, pap smear and many others
were performed. Specialists in fields such as internal medicine,
dermatology, cardiology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, gynecology,
urology and many more provided individual consultations.
"You cannot beat
this type of benefit because the cost is very minimal as
compared to hospitals and clinics and they (health fair
attendees) are getting very good information for what little
they are paying," said Dr. Ray Maldonado, a medical sonographer.
Ten health awareness
seminars were conducted by skilled professionals. Topics
included New Trends in Hypertension Treatment, Current Update
in Respiratory Tract Infection, Type II Diabetes Mellitus
and Cardiovascular Disease, Single-Agent Efficacy for Treatment
of Dyslipidemia, Disruptive Behaviors in Physicians amongst
others. Many pharmaceutical companies and clinics were also
present including Merck, AstraZeneca, Novartis, Glaxo Simth
Kline Beecham, LabCorp, M.D. Anderson to provide information
about preventive medicine, medical equipment and other healthcare
needs.
This year the Health
Fair was inaugurated by two distinguished guests: Dr. Landon
Homer M.D., president of Texas Medical Association and Dr.
Daniel Saylak D.O., president of Texas Osteopathic Medical
Association. Commenting on the health fair Dr. Homer said,
"We are very appreciative of the work that you do and are
going to do today. The Texas Medical Association stands
squarely behind those people who promote the good health
issues that represents man helping man and this is certainly
one of those.
Dr. Daniel Saylak
also serves as medical director of the Texas-1 Disaster
Medical Assistance Team for the National Disaster Medical
Services further commented, "There is so much commonality
amongst us in this room. Not only the spirit of service
but I sense the spirit of love, love for one another and
love for those we are about to serve. I serve as the senior
medical officer for the disaster medical assistance team
and BAPS Charities fed over 700 families during Hurricane
Katrina. You have no idea what that means. While we were
trying to help with the care of broken bodies you were also
helping broken spirits and hunger."
