Canada, an enthusiastic participant in the 2008 Earth Hour event, surpassed itself this year. Utilities in Toronto, reported a 15.1 percent drop in electricity use over the hour, compared to 8.7 percent during Earth Hour 2008.
BAPS Charities in Canada contributed to this success by hosting a special family gathering to help save electricity and promote family values. Over 500 families showed their support to the 2nd annual Earth Hour Celebrations organized by BAPS Charities. Earth Hour is an annual international event created by The World Wide Fund for Nature (World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
The special program consisted of an informative parenting seminar where parents and children participated in workshops to better understand each other. The workshops included sessions on healthy living, family harmony and extra-curricular activities for families.
As part of its power-saving initiatives, a candle light program was organized for the families after the power switch was tripped between 7:00pm and 9:30pm.
BAPS Charities community centers are constructed using environment friendly materials. The buildings utilize power saving LED lighting and employ management practices to ensure energy consumption is kept optimal and efficient. |
