In terms of gender equality,
India ranks 108th in the world (Human Development Report
2000). The condition of Indian women is reflected in low
adult literacy of 43.5% for women and 67.1% for men; gender
differentials in enrollment in schools - 46% of girls and
61% boys, high maternal mortality of 410 per 100,000 live
births, and a sex ratio that is increasingly masculine.
Gender based discrimination is
manifest in female foeticide, infanticide, chronic neglect
of the girl child, unequal wages, non-recognition of women's
contribution to family labour, lack of access and control
over resources, feminisation of poverty, increasing violence
and crime against women. A largely patriarchic society forces
women in the web of low income, low education and low health.
