The recent floods in Orissa during mid-July, instigated by unusually heavy rains, caused rivers, streams and dams to overflow, resulting in mass flooding.

Area affected

:

Over 18,790 villages in 24 districts were affected. Severely affected: The districts of Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Jajpur, Khurda, and Angul.

Affected

:

9.678 million people, including an estimated 2.1 million children.

Casualties

:

93 people were reported killed due to the floods.

Livestock

:

18,149 heads of cattle perished. 4.2 million affected.

Homeless

:

250,615 houses damaged.

Crop

:

9 million hectares of crop area damaged. Crop loss estimated at Rs. 3.2 billion

Working with Zero Administration Cost, 67 BAPS volunteers were deployed to conduct the relief operation.

IMMEDIATE HELP

From 21 July to 6 August, truckloads of relief supplies full of foodstuff and medicines with a team of professional doctors and volunteers from Kolkata. Immediate relief began in the Tirtol and Kujang Block of Jagatsinghpur District - one of the worst scenes of the flooding.

RELIEF DISTRIBUTION

Using rowing boats and wading through waist-high or chest-high waters, BAPS volunteers ensured that victims stranded in the worst affected areas were reached, rescued and provided with sufficient relief.

FOOD DISTRIBUTED

Village people in Orissa have a normal diet of rice and gur. There was massive shortage of food supplies in Orissa during the floods and so BAPS transported food items from Kolkata to Orissa. The food items consisted of:

Chira (flattened rice) - 12,250 kg.

Gur - 3,000 kg.

Rice - 1,000 kg.

Dal - 400 kg.

Biscuit - 17,328 packets.

Salt - 2,000 kg.


HOT MEAL SERVED

The people of the villages of Kath Kot (wards 9 & 10), Kukurkhai, Barmania and Sharadi (ward 1 & 2) had not eaten a hot meal for 7 days. BAPS organised a kitchen in which a hot meal consisting of rice and dalma was cook and served. Roughly 2,000 people had lunch.

MEDICAL HELP

BAPS had sent a special medical team of experienced and qualified doctors to the affected areas to treat patients suffering from acute diarrhoea, vomiting, gastric ailments, infections and fever. Altogether, BAPS organised medical camps in 18 flooded villages, treating some 1,500 patients.

VILLAGE CLEAN UP

Both wards in the village of Kath Kot were submerged under 4 feet of water. BAPS provided 8 water pumps with volunteers to completely pump out the water from both Kath Kot wards consisting of 102 homes with village roads and avenues. BAPS volunteers cleaned the entire village including homes, a panchayat office, a clinic and tube wells to ensure safe drinking water for the people.
