Terrorist Attack.
On the morning of Tuesday, 11 September
2001, terrorists hijacked four civilian domestic airplanes
in flight. 2 airplanes slammed into the north and
south towers of the famous World Trade Centre in New
York. The third hit the Pentagon in Washington DC.
The fourth crashed into a field 80 miles southeast
of Pittsburgh. |

2,999 people died (2226
civilians at the WTC, 245 passengers and crew of the
four flights, 125 at the Pentagon, 343 NY city fire
fighters and 60 police officers. |

All BAPS centres in USA helped.

IMMEDIATE HELP
- A BAPS team of ten physicians
and 250 local volunteers were immediately registered
with the State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) in
New York City to assist in any form of service at any
given moment.
BLOOD DONATION DRIVE
- BAPS' major centres in the
US conducted blood donation drives which continued for
a few weeks.

PRAYERS & SUPPORT
- Prayer meetings were conducted
in all 6,814 BAPS centres worldwide.
- BAPS declared Sunday, September
16, 2001 a National Day of Prayer for all 136 nationwide
BAPS centres. Community members of all faiths were invited
to joint prayer sessions.
- BAPS centres nationwide have
counselled and comforted individuals of all faiths including
family members of those who died in the tragedy.
- On the weekend of November
3, 2001, BAPS sadhus will conduct Vedic rites for the
souls of the deceased at Ground Zero with 4 - 8 families
of Indian victims.
FINANCIAL AID
- BAPS Charities immediately earmarked
$51,000 for financial assistance;
- BAPS Charities created the BAPS Charities – U.S. Relief Fund, the proceeds of which were
shared equally amongst the various charities approved
by the local, state or federal governments;
- The 4 th Annual BAPS Charities
Walkathon, “Family Walk For Family Values” was dedicated
to the victims and their families. 100% of proceeds
of these walkathons, in over 20 BAPS Charities centres nationwide
including New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Houston,
Dallas, Los Angeles, Florida, Atlanta, Fremont, were
used to assist the neediest families who lost loved
ones.
- Additionally, 80,000 mailers
appealing for monetary donations were distributed nationwide.
