Health experts continue to emphasize that sleep is a critical component of overall well-being and heart health. While diet and exercise are widely recognized as essential, sleep is increasingly acknowledged as the “third pillar” of health. Adequate and consistent sleep allows the body to restore itself, particularly supporting the cardiovascular system, and plays a vital role in maintaining physical, mental, and emotional balance.
BAPS Charities hosted a health awareness lecture titled “Sleep and Heart Health” in Toronto on April 11, 2026. Dr. Yagnesh Parekh explained that sleep is equally important as diet and exercise. It is not simply a period of rest, but an active time when the body performs essential functions such as repairing tissues, clearing toxins, and allowing the heart to recover. During sleep, blood pressure naturally lowers, heart rate slows, and stress hormones decrease, giving the cardiovascular system an opportunity to reset and heal.
The lecture also highlighted the risks of insufficient or poor-quality sleep. When sleep is disrupted or shortened, the body misses this critical “night shift,” increasing the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and other serious conditions. Participants learned to recognize warning signs such as chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating, morning headaches, and disrupted sleep patterns, which may indicate underlying sleep issues, including sleep apnea.
The session concluded with practical strategies to improve sleep hygiene, including maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a cool, dark, and quiet sleeping environment, and adopting healthy evening routines. Attendees were encouraged to view sleep as a foundational aspect of health, noting that prioritizing quality rest supports not only heart health but also overall well-being, daily functioning, and long-term quality of life.
