On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, BAPS Charities hosted “Unity in Diversity,” a full-day community event in Toronto, ON, celebrating cultural diversity and creating opportunities for seniors to share their experiences, family values, traditions, and perspectives while learning about the diverse backgrounds of others.
The event welcomed 220 participants aged 60 and above from across the Greater Toronto Area and was organized as part of the New Horizons for Seniors Program. The program provided seniors with opportunities to connect with others, share their personal experiences and heritage, participate in cultural and interactive activities, and appreciate the diversity that contributes to Canada’s multicultural identity.
The day began with registration and breakfast, followed by a welcome session introducing the theme of unity in diversity. Participants were encouraged to reflect on the different experiences, traditions, and values that shape families and communities. The program highlighted how seniors can play an important role in preserving and sharing cultural knowledge while also learning about the experiences and traditions of others.
A live performance by Rajesh Rajyaguru provided an engaging combination of music, humour, and storytelling. The performance explored changing lifestyles across generations and reflected on the experiences and values that connect people from different backgrounds. Through music and humour, participants were encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and the importance of passing positive family and cultural values to future generations.
An interactive workshop called “Unity Tapestry” provided another opportunity for participants to share their personal experiences. Each attendee received a different coloured thread and was invited to introduce themselves and share one family value they practise in their household. The activity encouraged participants to learn about one another and recognize the different values and traditions represented within the community. By bringing the individual threads together, the activity demonstrated how different backgrounds and experiences can contribute to a stronger and more connected community.
Following lunch, participants took part in small group discussions. The discussion explored how unity and community connections can help individuals navigate different stages of life and overcome challenges. Participants shared their personal experiences, family traditions, and perspectives on building supportive relationships within their communities.
The afternoon continued with a panel discussion which provided an opportunity to discuss cultural backgrounds, experiences of coming to Canada, and the importance of maintaining cultural identity while becoming part of Canada’s diverse society. Panelists shared their experiences and perspectives on how cultural traditions, family values, and community connections can be passed on to younger generations.
The discussion also explored ways families can create opportunities to celebrate and share their heritage. Participants discussed the importance of storytelling, spending time together, participating in cultural activities, and sharing traditions with children and grandchildren. The conversation highlighted how seniors can serve as an important link between generations by preserving their experiences and cultural knowledge while encouraging younger generations to appreciate Canada’s multicultural environment.
The event concluded with a motivational presentation focused on cooperation, appreciation, mutual support, and building strong relationships. Participants were encouraged to appreciate the different contributions that individuals bring to their families and communities and to recognize that diversity can strengthen a community when people work together and support one another.
Throughout the day, participants had opportunities to socialize, share experiences, participate in interactive activities, and learn from people with different backgrounds and life experiences. The combination of music, storytelling, group activities, discussions, and panel conversations created an engaging environment for seniors to celebrate their own heritage while appreciating the diverse cultures and experiences represented within the community.
The event received positive feedback from participants, who appreciated the opportunity to take part in the activities, meet others, and learn from different perspectives.
Hiteshbhai Patel, participant, shared, “We enjoyed the event, especially the live performance. The messages delivered through the music and humour were amazing. We also had the opportunity to meet and get to know many wonderful people.”
