BAPS Charities responded swiftly to the urgent needs arising from Cyclone Fina by assembling and delivering 120 emergency food kits to families in the Tiwi Islands. This rapid relief effort ensured that over 1.4 tonnes of essential sustenance reached those most impacted by the severe weather.
This initiative underscores BAPS Charities’ unwavering commitment to standing by communities in times of crisis, providing timely and practical support when it is needed most.
Mobilising within just 2.5 days, over 20 dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to assemble the kits. Each kit, weighing over 12kg, was carefully packed to sustain a family, containing staples such as flour, rice, long-life milk, sugar, and pasta, alongside proteins like lentils and chickpeas. This attention to detail ensured that recipients received nutritious, substantial food supplies to assist them during the immediate recovery phase.
The success of this operation was built on strong collaboration with key partners. The NT Chief Minister’s Office provided crucial coordination support, while SeaLink Australia assisted with the loading and transport of the goods across the water. The Australian Red Cross played a vital role in the on-island distribution, ensuring the aid reached the most vulnerable households efficiently.
BAPS Charities is grateful for the opportunity to partner with these organisations to deliver this critical aid. By working together, we can amplify our impact, offering not just material relief but a message of solidarity and hope to the people of the Tiwi Islands as they rebuild.
