Obesity is a growing public health concern in North America, with nearly one-third of Canadian adults and over 40% of American adults affected. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among South Asian populations, including the Indian community, the risk is particularly concerning. Studies have shown that South Asians tend to develop obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower body mass indices (BMIs) than other groups. This emphasizes the need for targeted education and prevention efforts within the community.
To inform the community about obesity and its adverse effects, BAPS Charities hosted a health awareness lecture in Scarborough, Ontario, on July 26, 2025. The session aimed to equip attendees with the latest medical understanding and practical tools to reduce health risks associated with obesity.
The lecture informed attendees of serious health conditions linked to obesity, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and mental health disorders. Prabhjot Bagha guided attendees through lifestyle modifications, including portion control, increased intake of fruits, vegetables, and fiber, regular physical activity, and stress-reducing practices like yoga and meditation. The session also explored the pros and cons of emerging treatments, particularly weight-reduction medications, helping attendees make informed decisions about their health.
Through the health lecture initiative, BAPS Charities continues to provide wellness and preventive care in local communities across North America.
