The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide will experience some degree of hearing loss, making it a growing public health challenge. To raise awareness of this growing issue, BAPS Charities hosted a Health Awareness Lecture titled “The Silent Epidemic: Rising Challenges of Hearing Loss” in Scarborough, ON on July 18, 2026. The lecture explored the causes, warning signs, and long-term effects of hearing loss while emphasizing the importance of prevention and early intervention.
The lecture, presented by Dr. Rohit Patel, highlighted how hearing loss often develops gradually, with many people unaware of the condition until it begins to affect their daily lives. Participants learned that nearly half of adults over the age of 75 experience hearing loss and discussed the growing prevalence of hearing loss among younger populations due to unsafe listening practices, such as prolonged use of earbuds at high volumes, according to the Hearing Health Foundation. The session also examined the connection between hearing loss and dementia, noting that untreated hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline, while encouraging participants to protect their hearing through safe listening habits, routine hearing screenings, and timely treatment.
The lecture encouraged participants to take proactive steps to protect their hearing and improve their overall quality of life. Through initiatives such as its Health Awareness Lecture series, BAPS Charities continues to empower individuals with health education that promotes prevention, early intervention, and healthier communities.
