On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, BAPS Charities hosted “Discovering Canada Together,” a full-day community excursion in Toronto, ON, providing seniors with an opportunity to explore Canada’s history, culture, and heritage while building meaningful social connections. Through an interactive outing to one of Toronto’s iconic destinations, participants experienced the city’s natural and cultural landscape while learning, socializing, and developing a deeper appreciation for the community and country they call home.
The event welcomed over 100 participants aged 60 and above from across the Greater Toronto Area and was organized as part of the New Horizons for Seniors Program. The outing encouraged seniors to participate in an engaging community experience that combined exploration, learning, physical activity, social participation, and appreciation for Canada’s shared story. It also provided an opportunity for participants to build lasting friendships and strengthen their sense of belonging within the broader Canadian community.
The day began with participants gathering at the BAPS Complex for departure by bus. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as seniors prepared for a day of exploration and fellowship. The group travelled to Union Station near the Centre Island Ferry Dock. On a beautiful sunny day, participants enjoyed a walk to the ferry terminal, providing an opportunity to socialize while experiencing Toronto’s vibrant waterfront.
The journey to Centre Island by ferry was an important part of the “Discovering Canada Together” experience. Participants enjoyed panoramic views of Toronto’s waterfront, skyline, and surrounding landscape while travelling across Lake Ontario. The experience provided seniors with an opportunity to appreciate one of Canada’s most recognizable urban landscapes and reflect on the city’s development, natural environment, and cultural character.
One of the highlights of the outing was the opportunity to take family and group photographs against the scenic backdrop of the CN Tower, Toronto skyline, and Lake Ontario. The iconic views provided a meaningful connection to Toronto’s identity and offered participants an opportunity to capture memories of their shared experience.
The outing promoted healthy and active living alongside learning and exploration. Almost all participants completed more than 10,000 steps during the day, demonstrating how community excursions can provide accessible opportunities for seniors to remain physically active while participating in meaningful social and educational experiences.
Beyond physical activity, “Discovering Canada Together” created opportunities for seniors to strengthen their connection to Canada through shared experiences. Participants came from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, and the outing provided an informal setting where they could exchange stories, learn from one another, and reflect on their own experiences of Canada. By exploring a local destination together, seniors were able to connect their individual experiences with the broader history, culture, and communities that make up Canadian society.
Reflecting on the experience, participant Sarla Kotecha shared, “The event provided a perfect balance of exercise, social interaction, and enjoyment. Walking through the park, taking photos with friends, and spending time outdoors made the day very special. I am grateful to BAPS Charities for organizing such a thoughtful and engaging experience for seniors.”
Participant Subodh Patel shared, “I thoroughly enjoyed the excursion to Centre Island. The scenic ferry ride, beautiful views of Toronto’s skyline, and opportunity to walk and spend time with friends made it a wonderful day. It was great to stay active, meet new people, and create lasting memories together.”
Through “Discovering Canada Together,” BAPS Charities continues to create meaningful opportunities for seniors to explore Canadian history, culture, and heritage through engaging visits to local landmarks and community destinations. Supported through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the initiative promotes social participation, learning, active living, and a deeper sense of connection to Canada. By bringing seniors together to discover and appreciate the communities around them, the program helps build lasting friendships, encourage lifelong learning, and strengthen participants’ connection to Canada’s shared story.
