On June 1, 2025, BAPS Charities brought the community together in Long Island, NY, for its annual Spirit of Service: Walk-Run. This inspiring event encouraged participants to step forward in support of Friends of Karen and General Needs, raising awareness for two meaningful causes: helping children facing critical illness and supporting veterans with essential services. The event promoted service, well-being, and a strong sense of community.
With nearly 500 participants, the event welcomed individuals of all ages, including Assemblyman Steve Stern of the New York State Assembly, District 10, Legislator Jason Richberg of Suffolk County, District 15, Councilman Dr. Dave Bennardo of the Town of Huntington, Gregory Grizopoulos, Chairman of the Huntington Conservative Committee, Susan and Lonnie Sherman, Founders of General Needs, and Leslie A. Bellissimo, Regional Director for Long Island – Metro NYC, all of whom joined in solidarity for the cause.
Reflecting on the day’s impact, Leslie A. Bellissimo of Friends of Karen emphasized the importance of raising awareness for children’s needs and praised the community for showing up to walk in support. Susan Sherman of General Needs spoke about the significance of providing basic necessities for veterans and applauded the involvement of youth volunteers who demonstrated a strong spirit of service.
This BAPS Charities Walk-Run is one of more than 100 similar events held across North America as part of a broader initiative benefiting local organizations. For over 20 years, BAPS Charities has organized more than 1,100 walks, making a lasting impact in communities by supporting vital causes and promoting a spirit of unity and service.
