The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination each week. However, more than 52% of all adults do not meet these guidelines. Following these guidelines can contribute to overall health, and decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes.
Walking is a great way to get the physical activity needed to obtain health benefits. Walking does not require any special skills. It also does not require a gym membership or expensive equipment.In order to bring about awareness on this important topic, BAPS Charities organized a health lecture for women on February 28, 2016 in Minneapolis, MN. Topics covered the benefits of walking, proper methods and posture when walking, setting realistic goals, and ways to incorporate it into day-to-day activities. Attendees actively participated in discussing reasons for lack of physical activity as well as ideas for starting an exercise regimen and sticking to it.
