By 2050, it is estimated that nearly two billion people, or roughly 22% of the world’s population, will be over the age of 60. While people are living longer, there is little evidence to suggest that older people today are experiencing their later years in much better health than their parents. The extent to which older people can enjoy these added years of life and contribute back to their families and communities depends heavily on one factor – their health.
On June 26, 2016, BAPS Charities in Syracuse, NY, hosted a Health Awareness lecture focused on Healthy Aging. There are a number of factors that influence our health during later stages of life, of which only a small proportion are attributed to genetic inheritance. Much of the influence is related to personal characteristics, environmental interactions, behaviors stemming back to our childhoods.
The lecture was presented by Dr. Kaushal Nanavati and emphasized that making healthy lifestyle choices early and throughout life can have a significant impact on the quality of life as one ages. Remaining physically active, making good food choices and having regular health checkups all help promote and prolong mind and body well-being. Additionally, positive thinking can help with stress reduction, improved immunity and lowering the risk for heart disease – all factors which help live a longer, healthier life.
