Oral health plays a vital role in overall well-being, yet it remains one of the most overlooked aspects of preventive care. The Government of Canada reports that almost all Canadian adults have experienced tooth decay at some point in their lives. Poor oral hygiene is also recognised as a contributing factor to serious systemic illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes.
To promote awareness of this critical connection, BAPS Charities hosted a health awareness lecture on dental care in Scarborough, Ontario, on November 9, 2025. The lecture, titled “Guarding the Gate: Protecting Your Health Starts with Dental Care,” aimed to educate community members about the importance of oral hygiene and its link to overall health.
Dr. Kunjan Thakkar highlighted practical steps for prevention—brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, using fluoride mouthwash, maintaining a balanced diet, and visiting a dentist regularly. Attendees also learned about choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste, and how lifestyle factors such as smoking and poor nutrition impact dental health.
Through its ongoing health lecture series, BAPS Charities continues to advance community wellness and preventive education across North America.
