Food Drive & Medical Camp for the Yatima Group’s Chamazi Orphanage

On February 2, 2014, the volunteers of BAPS Charities organized a food drive and a medical camp at the Yatima Group Chamazi Orphanage, which is a home for young, orphaned children.  The home was founded on the 7th of March, 2001 by the then president of Tanzania, Ali Hassan Mwinyi. At present, the home is sustained by various charity groups. Winfrida Lubanza is the chief caretaker of the home. There are a total of 118 orphans in the orphanage, whose age groups range from a few months old to 18 years. In total, the orphanage has 6 caretakers, who manage 4 dormitories, housing 66 girls, and 52 boys.

Mrs. Winfrida Lubanza received the volunteers upon arrival. All the goods were of loaded from the pick-up, and were taken to an office. The medical procedures for the orphans were conducted in the office by Dr. Partha Das, with the aid of 4 other nurses. He tested each orphan’s BMI, and conducted various E&T and infection tests. Many were diagnosed with conditions and were prescribed medication, which was provided by BAPS Charities. After the tests, the volunteers handed three different gift packets (one containing stationary, one containing snacks and food, and one containing sweets) to all of the children. The rest of the foodstuffs for the main kitchen were handed over to the caretakers of the orphanage.
